Instant Pot: How to Quick Release

Many users have asked us for guidance on how to perform a quick release on their Instant Pot, so we’re here to help. Quickly releasing the pressure in an Instant Pot is an essential step in many of the posts that you will find on our website, but it must be done carefully to avoid burns or accidents.

Quick release is typically used for foods that can overcook if left under pressure for too long, such as vegetables or delicate seafood.

Equipment

  1. Instant Pot

Directions for a Quick Release

Make sure that the timer has gone off on the Instant Pot and is showing zero. Or that it is counting up.

Make sure the valve is pointing away from everything. Stand back from the Instant Pot and avoid placing your hand or face directly above the steam valve.

Next, locate the steam release mechanism on your instant pot and carefully set the valve to the “Venting” position. Be cautious and stay clear of the steam’s path.

Note: the release mechanism might be a button or a lever on the Instant Pot. The next image shows a lever release mechanism.

Quick Release

If the Instant Pot starts to spit, then immediately close the valve and allow everything to rest for a moment or two. The spitting is caused by liquids bubbling inside and could cause a huge mess if not allowed to settle.

Once the floating pin drops, you have successfully performed a quick release. You can now open up the Instant Pot and enjoy whatever tasty recipe you grabbed from our website. 🙂

Until next time,
Hubby
