Dicing an onion
Do you know how to dice an onion? I’ve seen the way some people do it and it sends shivers up my spine. It can be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. Nothing like trying to keep a whole onion from rolling around while you are trying to cut it! I hope you don’t need that finger. Why don’t we spend a few minutes and learn to do it right? It can be an almost pleasant experience. Follow these steps and you will be dicing like a pro.
Equipment:
- A sharp knife. If you don’t have a sharp knife, then you might want to read this post.
- A cutting board
Ingredients
- Onion
Directions to Dicing an Onion
There are two sides to an onion. The one side is ‘smooth’ and the other side is ‘hairy.’ Here is a picture of the hairy side.
Your first cut should be on the smooth side. You want to cut off just the tip so that you can start controlling this rolling beast.
Put that flat side down and cut directly in the middle of the hairy end.
Peel off the outer layer of the onion. Lay the half flat on the cutting board. Make a cut from the ‘front’ of the onion toward the hairy part, but don’t go all the way to the ‘back’. Start on the outside and work your way across.
Continue slicing all the way across the onion.
Now turn the onion so the slices you made are perpendicular to you and slice all the way across the onion.
As you work your way to the back the dices will fall onto your board, and everywhere. But you are dicing an onion!
Stop when the onion starts to feel unsafe to hold!! You should have a small section of onion left and lots of nice, diced pieces.
Until next time,
