Making a Cake with Children Part 1 – Baking

Children love to help their parents, even if the parents don’t want the help.  They just want to do what you do.  I’m for enabling them, here is how I baked a cake with my children. For reference, my children are 6 and 7.

Tools and equipment :

01) Patience! [And lots of it! Too bad you can’t buy this stuff!]
02) Hand Vacuum [Accept that there is going to be a mess]
03) Soap [Good old soap and water to clean sticky hands]
04) APRONS for everyone, including any pets that might wander by! [There is no link here. Lubby made ours.]
05) Cake Mix [Start easy. Everyone will enjoy it more.]
06) Glass Measure Cup [I prefer to use glass for liquids.]
07) Measuring cups [I have a mix and match of these.]
08) Cake Pans [My children wanted square cake]
09) Whisk [I like the silicone ones]
Optional equipment
10) Crisco [For greasing the pan]
Specialized equipment
11) Bake-Even Strips [This is a cake-baking secret!]

Don’t do anything with your children in which you are pressed for time. Children move at their own pace. They are absorbing details and sensory inputs that we take for granted. It takes them time to process and they might get lost while they do it. 🙂
Accept that there is going to be a mess! And let them try to do everything, they might surprise you. It might be a bad surprise. 🙂

Making the batter is easy enough. Cake Mix + Eggs + Liquids.

Then mix it all together.

Now let’s grease our pan! We like to use Crisco for this part. Children LOVE to do this. They put everything into it, so be prepared to wipe Crisco off of elbows and hair. I’m not sure how it gets there but it does!

BAKE!
Secret Tip: Use Bake-Even Strips to get a nice level-looking cake. You just soak them in water and wrap them around your pan.

It will help when you go to decorate.

When the cakes come out, let them cool. I wrap them in plastic wrap and put them in the fridge.

Part 2: Frosting!
Part 3: Decorating!

Until next time
